I am contacting you about a remarkable device that has already allowed nerve deaf people to hear again.

I am currently arranging to start a study of this remarkable device, which will attempt to find out just how effective this remarkable device is at allowing nerve deaf people to hear again.

This remarkable device is a small precision scientific instrument with an extensive digital signal processor that encodes sound and modulates it onto ultrasonic signals. The inventor inventor originally discovered an entirely new way to transmit sound into the human brain back in 1958.

In 1991, Martin Lenhardt of the University of Virginia discovered that human beings have the ability to detect ultrasonic sound when it is transmitted through the skin, bones and liquids of the body. His groundbreaking discovery was published in the prestigious journal Science, Vol. 253, 5, 1991, 82.

All that Martin Lenhardt did was to successfully duplicate the inventors original 1958 device, using sophisticated ultrasonic transducers. He then discovered that a tiny organ in the inner ear that is normally associated with balance is also a hearing organ for ultrasonic sound.

The organ is called the saccule and is about the size of a pea. It contains nerve endings, called macula, and an otolith, a gelatinous cap containing fine sand-like particles of calcium carbonate called otoconia. When the head is tilted in relation to gravity, the macula signals the vestibulocochlear nerve in the nervous system so that balance can be regained. The saccule has nerve endings that are distributed throughout the brain. Some of these nerves go to the area of the brain that computes sound. Other nerves are distributed into areas concerned with long-term memory. The remarkable device that I will soon be conducting a study of transmits modulated ultrasonic sound at 40,000 cycles per second (40 kHz), so it should be possible for most people to train their brain pathways so that they can "hear" through the saccule pathway, just as some nerve deaf people are already doing.

This remarkable device has been developed and engineered to provide a means for ultrasonic waves to be interpreted by our brain as "hearing". The technology bypasses the normal audio mechanisms used by the body to hear sound and provides a direct neural stimulation directly to the brain.

When the transducers of this remarkable device are placed on the face, the sound can be clearly 'heard' as if it were coming from inside the brain. In fact the sound is perceived through the trigeminal nerve, as tests have already proven that this remakable device does not work via bone conduction.

The key to this remarkable device is the stimulation of the nerves of the skin with a digitally coded signal that carries the same time-ratio code that is recognized as sound by any nerve in the body.

Is there a link to find out more about the credibility of this such findings? Because if this was in fact, true, this would change the world and put Cochlear Implant industry out of business.

There seems to be very little information available from studies done on this remarkable device, which is why I intend to conduct my own study on just how effective this remarkable devie is at allowing nerve deaf people to hear again.

However, I do know that a few years ago the University of Virginia built one of these remarkable devices and proved that we have a small organ in the inner ear that detects ultrasonic signals, they also indicated that 100% of deaf people can hear the signal if the ultrasonic signal level is at an 85 db level.

This remarkable device is an extended hearing device which provides an alternative input channel for perceiving sound at higher efficiency. The device stimulates the skin with a vibration which is then understood by the brain in the way some sound is heard through the ears - except the ears are not involved. The device is useful in extending hearing for most people regardless of the efficiency of their "normal" hearing. Simply put, this remarkable device can take any sound including speech or music and convert the signal to one which is clearly understood by the person using the device.

The sound input is provided by a stereo CD player, walkman, microphone/amplifier or any other sound generating technology working in conjunction with the devie, which transfers the sound complete - first the high frequencies come into perceptible focus and then the lower bass sounds begin to be understood. When being used, research has shown that the listener harmonizes with the sound in a much different way than is possible using the limits imposed by "normal hearing." As an extended hearing device, this remarkable device is a tool with numerous applications including accelerated learning, increased sound perception and increased memorization capacity of the information heard with the device.

I can tell you that as a child, the inventor of this remarkable device was noted for his exceptional gifts and unusual abilities to become exceedingly proficient in the sciences and the arts. He excelled in bio-chemistry, physics and electronics and was declared a child prodigy in these.

His early inventions include a missile detector that he invented at the age of 11 from the spare parts of an amateur radio. At the age of 12, this missile detector attracted the attention of the American military due to its precision and accuracy in detecting "classified" missile tests. Later the US government classified this missile detector as "Top Secret" and then incorporated it as a significant part of its defense program.

By the age of 13 he had invented the remarkable device that allowed people to 'hear' sound, not by ear, but by a vestigel pathway through the skin and nervous system, and in 1962, the Acadamy of Achievement in San Diego, California awarded him with the gold medal for this invention. That same year, LIFE magazine featured him in the aricle, "The Take-Over Generation" and listed him as one of the top ten most promising scientists in America at just 17 years of age!

The remarkable device was viewed as so revolutionary by the US Patent Office that it could not believe that it would work and so initially refused to grant a patent. This was because the patent examiners thought that this was just sound transfer through bone conduction and refused to issue a patent for 12 years.

However, in a rare meeting in 1970, the patent office agreed to examine this remarkable device for themselves and meet the inventor and his attorney. They both encountered a surprise. The examiner had a deaf employee attend the meeting to test the device. The man was totally nerve deaf in one ear and almost totally deaf in the other. Patrick showed him how to use the device and played a record of the famous Maria Callas singing an opera. As he was able to hear the undistorted beauty of her voice, the tears of joy streamed down his face.

After witnessing this remarkable demonstration, the United States Patent Office decided for the first time in its history to re-open a file after it was officially closed, and so the inventor was finally granted a United States Patent. Prior to this, scientists had thought that sound could only be perceived by the inner ear to the brain.

A Houston Post reporter (who had heard about the remarkable demonstration of the device given to the Patent Office) had a relative who was nerve deaf from spinal meningitis. So he quickly arranged for the device to be tested, and when the device worked on his relative, an explosion of news coverage resulted in the story being carried on the international wire services.

Unfortunately in an agonizing infringement, the Defense Intelligence Agency sealed the patent and took posession of the technology under the excuse that it was a matter of national security. The national security order forbade the inventor from working on the device, or even talking about this remarkable invention.

However, after many years and nearly 300 inventions later, the inventor finally recieved the patent for public use after a triumphant court case, in which the secrecy and the seizure of the device by the Government Agency was over-ruled.

Here is the inventors own description of how the device works:"This device converts sound waves into digitized electric signals which have wave form and timing configuration, which can be deciphered by the human brain. The internal hearing, or mental sound printing, is delivered intact. The electronic signal is fully perceptible as if the sound were heard through the ears, but the sound is heard as if it were emanating from inside the persons head."

Here is a quote from the inventors article in Nexus Magazine (Feb/March 1994): "All hearing aids stimulate tiny bones in the ear. In order for bone conduction to work, the cochlea or inner ear that connects to the 8th cranial nerve must function. People who are nerve deaf cannot hear through bone conduction because the nerves in the inner ear are not functional. A number of nerve deaf people who have had the entire inner ear removed by surgery have been able to hear with this device, which is really an electronic telepathy machine. Several tests have proven that it bypasses the 8th cranial nerve or hearing nerve and transmits sound directly to the brain. This means that the device stimulates perception through a 7th or Alternate Sense."

Here is an extract from the book Mega Brain Power by Michael Hutchison:"Our skin is not just a covering, it is an enormously sensitive organ with hundreds of thousands of receptors for temperature and vibrotactile input (we call it transdermal or transcutaneous transfer) which piezoelectrically converts vibration to nerve signals through the CranioSacral canal. A huge section of the brainstem and nervous system is devoted to sensing and processing vibration."

It is intersting to note that experiments carried out with this remarkable device mind-linking between two or more people show that it is possible to learn directly from the mind of another person. This phenomenon has been described as an electronic 'corpus collosum' between the minds of two or more people (the corpus collosum is the semi-permeable bridge between the two hemispheres of an individual's brain), and gives a new insight into why the Defense Intelligence Agency sealed the patent and took posession of the technology under the excuse that it was a matter of national security.

I do have more information about the inventor and his many other inventions, but am particularly interested in this one invention, as it has great potential for a number of uses.
